Ramaphosa hails Platreef mine’s community model

President Cyril Ramaphosa has encouraged mining companies to follow Ivanplats' community-centered approach after launching production at the Platreef Mine in Mokopane, Limpopo. The facility represents South Africa's first operation where residents hold equity stakes through a trust system, allocating 20 percent of broad-based empowerment shares to surrounding communities and three percent to non-management employees. Executive Chairman Robert Friedland emphasized that Ivanplats has reinvested all revenue domestically for nearly four decades without extracting profits from the country.

The platinum group metals operation will extract palladium, rhodium, gold, nickel, and copper while employing roughly 85 percent of its workforce from nearby areas. A five-megawatt solar installation provides renewable energy to operations and the national grid. Production is projected to reach over four million tonnes annually through phased expansion, establishing the site among global leaders in precious metals output while incorporating skills training programs for technological advancement in the sector.
