Referee sparks controversy by reversing penalty call in Al-Hilal defeat

Dutch referee Danny Makili created chaos during the Al-Hilal versus Fluminense quarter-final match. He first gave Al-Hilal a penalty kick near halftime after Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo went down inside the box. Fluminense defender Xavier had challenged Leonardo during the play. Makili pointed to the spot and seemed confident about his call. Everything changed when he walked over to check the VAR screen.

The referee decided to cancel his penalty decision after watching the replay. Egyptian referee expert Mohamed Kamal Risha blasted Makili for changing his mind. Risha said Xavier made contact with Leonardo using his left foot. The challenge was careless and deserved a penalty, according to the analyst. Makili should have stuck with his first decision instead of backing down.

Risha did support the referee on two other penalty appeals from Al-Hilal during the second half. Defender Koulibaly went down twice, but neither incident warranted a foul call. The analyst praised Makili for getting those decisions right. He also complimented the referee's positioning and physical condition throughout the game. However, Risha criticized Makili for making the match harder on himself through the controversial reversal.
