Arrangements to send home the Kenyan officer killed in Haiti are moving forward, according to the Multinational Security Support Mission. Officials from MSS, Kenya's Foreign Affairs Ministry, Dominican authorities, and the National Police Service are all working closely together.
Documents are almost ready, and plans to transport the officer's remains back to Kenya are underway. MSS praised the officer's extraordinary bravery and said he sacrificed his life courageously doing his job. He stood out for his discipline and commitment.
The officer, Police Constable Samuel Kaetuai, age 26, became the first member of the Kenya-led MSS force to lose his life. MSS troops arrived in Haiti last June to restore order after violent gangs took over much of Port-au-Prince and rural areas.
Gang attacks killed over 5,500 Haitians in 2024, forcing more than one million residents from their homes. Constable Kaetuai died during a mission against gang members near Pont-Sondé. Haitian leader Leslie Voltaire visited MSS headquarters to offer condolences.
Ambassadors in Haiti also expressed sympathy. Additionally, Kenyan Police Chief Douglas Kanja visited the officer's family in Kajiado County on March 2, 2025, to offer comfort. MSS vowed to continue operations aggressively, promising Haitians safety and stability.
