Resident Evil 9 Almost Started As Open World Horror

Capcom started making Resident Evil 9 back in 2017. The company wanted an open-world game with many players working together. Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine would explore a fake island based on Singapore. Resident Evil 7 sold poorly at first and scared the company, so developers decided to make something completely different from that single-player horror game.

The project changed direction around 2021 when Resident Evil Village launched. During this restart, most of the original ideas were discarded. Leon Kennedy stayed as the main character for the new version. Some parts from the first concept remain, but the game looks very different. Capcom leaker Dusk Golem shared these details through social media.

Other Resident Evil projects face their problems. The Resident Evil Zero remake received major changes about six months ago. Revelations 3 was canceled in 2022 after leaks revealed its existence. Resident Evil 9 should be announced in 2025 and released in 2026. The long development time comes from Capcom's desire to change how the series works.
