Ricky Adelayitar wins first award, credits casting visionary

Ghanaian actor Ricky Adelayitar just credited a specific casting director for his long-awaited award. After four decades in the business, he won Best Male Actor in a Leading Role for the movie The Fisherman. Adelayitar said this first major prize is deeply meaningful because it came from the very first film he was cast in by Mawuko Kuadzi of MK Casting. The film was produced by Kofi Owusu Afriyie and directed by Zoey Martinson.

He explained that Kuadzi did not just give him a part. The casting director pushed him hard during auditions, demanding more emotional depth and pushing him past his comfort zone. Adelayitar recalled Kuadzi constantly urging him to dig deeper. He also remembered watching Kuadzi's precise work on the set of Beasts of No Nation, where the director famously discovered a young Abraham Attah. Adelayitar said being chosen by someone with that eye for truthful performance made him feel a responsibility to deliver his best.

The actor views his win as a sign for other performers who have worked for years without recognition. He believes one person truly seeing an artist can change everything. Industry peers note Kuadzi's rising profile as a casting director focused on performance integrity, which has helped bring African talent to global audiences. The success of The Fisherman and this collaboration is sparking talk about a potential resurgence for Ghana's film industry, showing how shared artistic vision can redefine careers.
