Assailants murdered Bernard Katabazi, a 48-year-old trailer driver from Rubirizi district, during a highway robbery on Friday evening. The attackers intercepted his vehicle at Habufureeka trading centre along the Kabale-Mbarara road in Rukiga district around 8 PM. Katabazi transported 35 tonnes of rice from Rwanda toward the Mpondwe border with Democratic Republic of Congo when criminals struck. The perpetrators stole 50 rice bags before fatally wounding the driver with multiple cuts and head injuries. They abandoned his body on the roadway and escaped with their stolen cargo.
Fellow driver Chris Goloba discovered the victim and contacted authorities about the brutal attack. Kigezi Regional police spokesperson Elly Maate verified the incident and confirmed ongoing investigations. Medical officials moved Katabazi's remains to Kabale regional referral hospital mortuary for autopsy procedures. Police continue searching for suspects responsible for this violent crime. This murder followed another fatal incident Thursday when motorcycle thieves killed 28-year-old boda-boda rider Henry Mugume in nearby Muhanga town council.
