Rulani Mokwena refuses to settle for just any coaching job after leaving Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club. The 38-year-old South African coach walked away from his contract that should have lasted until June 2027. Both sides agreed to end the deal early because Wydad could not pay salaries on time. The club faced serious money problems that made working there impossible. Mokwena had previously coached top South African teams Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Multiple teams from wealthy Middle Eastern countries tried to hire the talented coach. Al Jandal SC from Saudi Arabia made him an offer but he said no because they play in the second division. Al Shahaniya SC from Qatar also tried to sign him but failed to convince the former Pirates manager. Egyptian champions Pyramids FC started talks with Mokwena but cannot move forward until they sort out their current coach situation. The Gulf region clubs offered good money but could not tempt him.
Mokwena wants something much better than what these teams can provide. He has returned to South Africa and waits for the right opportunity to come along. The coach dreams of managing a team that plays in the CAF Champions League competition. He also considers working for a major international club that matches his high standards. People close to Mokwena say the recent offers simply did not meet his expectations for someone with his experience and reputation.
