A defendant died while awaiting sentencing at Rusape Magistrates Court after admitting guilt to negligent driving charges. Blessing Kalatala suffered a medical emergency during his Friday court appearance before Magistrate Babra Mateko. Prison officials transported him to Rusape Remand Prison following his collapse. He passed away later that same evening while in custody. Prosecutor Faith Mutukwa had outlined the circumstances of the traffic accident that brought Kalatala before the court.
The incident occurred on October 31, 2024, around 1:30 pm along the Harare-Mutare Road near the 192-kilometer marker. Kalatala operated a Toyota Hiace vehicle traveling from Nyazura toward Mutare when he attempted a right turn. His maneuver placed him directly in the path of an approaching Nissan AD Van driven by Linah Makufa. The collision injured Makufa and her three passengers, who received medical treatment following the crash.
