Five people died after Russia launched intense overnight attacks with more than 50 missiles and around 500 drones on Sunday, and tens of thousands lost electricity across Ukraine. A strike killed four family members in the village of Lapaivka near Lviv, while another person died in Zaporizhzhia. The assaults damaged energy infrastructure in multiple regions, and more than 73,000 consumers lost power after a plant was struck in Zaporizhzhia.
Poland scrambled fighter jets to protect its airspace as attacks targeted western Ukrainian cities near the border, and NATO deployed allied aircraft. Russia has controlled about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory since its 2022 invasion began. The attacks followed statements from US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg supporting Ukrainian deep strikes inside Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger air defense systems to counter what he termed aerial terror.
