Ruth Chepngetich faces a doping suspension over the Chicago marathon record

The Athletics Integrity Unit announced the provisional suspension of Ruth Chepngetich on Thursday after the Kenyan marathon runner tested positive for a banned substance. Chepngetich holds the women's marathon world record after running 2 hours 9 minutes 56 seconds in Chicago last October. The 30-year-old athlete tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a prohibited diuretic, during a test conducted on March 14. She initially chose a voluntary suspension in April while authorities investigated her case. The AIU has since issued formal charges and imposed a mandatory provisional suspension.

Brett Clothier, who heads the Athletics Integrity Unit, explained that the case will proceed to a disciplinary tribunal. The anti-doping code does not require immediate suspension for diuretic violations, which allowed Chepngetich to compete initially. Medical professionals use hydrochlorothiazide to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. Chepngetich withdrew from April's London Marathon, citing mental and physical concerns. The investigation continues as officials examine the circumstances surrounding her positive test.
