Ruto dropped billions in his impeached deputy's political bedroom, looking desperate. The president camped out in Nyeri for three days around New Year, hitting up Othaya, Mathira, and the main town with public rallies and planning sessions. He came back again that weekend for a party meeting at Sagana State Lodge with local UDA organizers. Mathira and the wider Nyeri area belong to Gachagua, who keeps calling himself the Mt Kenya kingpin, and Ruto hasn't visited since April.
The president threw around over Sh21 billion worth of goodies during his swing through the region. He promised 8,000 cheap apartments, 20 updated marketplaces, and dorms that'll house 7,200 college kids. Ruto opened the Karatina Marigiti market and checked out construction on the Marua Interchange. He tacked an extension onto the 84-kilometer Kenol-Sagana-Marua road that'll stretch to Nyeri Town and Chaka on the highway headed toward Nanyuki. Road upgrades alone will eat up Sh4 billion across Nyeri County.
