Kenyan President William Ruto will lead a key meeting of African leaders in Nairobi today. The meeting aims to build support for Raila Odinga, Kenya's candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC). Six presidents are expected to attend.
The Bureau Retreat on African Union Institutional Reforms will discuss many changes at the AU. The goal is to improve the AU's ability to work well and manage money. This will help the AU achieve its vision, according to Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sources say Raila Odinga's candidacy for the AUC will also be discussed. They expect President Ruto to make a strong case for his former political opponent.
The presidents of Ethiopia, Comoros, Togo, Ghana, Angola, and Guinea Bissau have confirmed they will attend. The current AUC chairman, Moussa Faki, will also be there.
President Umaro Sissaco of Guinea Bissau arrived in Kenya on Friday. During a visit to the State House, he backed Raila's candidacy. President Ruto announced Guinea Bissau's support on Saturday.
Former Ghanaian President John Mahama arrived on Sunday. He visited President Ruto and Raila Odinga last year. They talked at length about the AUC elections. Kimani Ichung'wah, the leader of Kenya's National Assembly, welcomed Mahama.
Ichung'wah said the summit lets African leaders have important talks and make plans for the region's growth.
The meeting comes as Raila Odinga has increased his campaigns across Africa. He wants to win the AUC elections on February 15, 2025.
Last week, Raila visited North Africa. He met with leaders from Algeria, Tunisia, and Mauritania to discuss his candidacy.
