Ryzen 5 9600 almost matches 9600X and saves cash

AMD recently released the Ryzen 5 9600 as a cheaper version of the popular Ryzen 5 9600X. However, finding one might be difficult. Even a month after launch, stores rarely stock them. A new PassMark test shows how this budget six-core Zen 5 CPU performs compared to its sibling.

The benchmark reveals that the 9600X outperforms the cheaper model by just 2.2% overall. The 9600 earned 29,369 points versus 30,016 for the 9600X. Single-core tests show a small 3.2% difference, with scores of 4433 and 4581. This makes perfect sense because these processors differ only by a 200 MHz boost clock speed.

The two CPUs share identical TDP ratings, core counts, cache amounts, and base clock speeds. You can overclock either processor for extra performance. Both include AMD Precision Boost 2 technology as standard. The main attraction of the 9600 will be its lower price tag.

Reports indicate it should cost between $250 and $260, saving you about $20 compared to the 9600X model. For those wanting to maximize their computer budget, the 9600 looks like a smart choice. The tiny performance difference probably becomes unnoticeable during everyday use. Most users would benefit more from saving $20 than paying extra for the barely faster version.
