S&C snags top finance lawyer in London power play

S&C just poached a finance veteran to keep fueling their massive growth in London. Patrick Clancy left Peerpoint at A&O Shearman to join Sullivan & Cromwell as counsel, a move the firm claims will buff their derivatives chops. He links back up with Barney Reynolds, a lawyer who quit the same shop for S&C a while back.

Reynolds called Clancy a top expert, while Mitch Eitel said this strengthens their grip on complex capital deals. The new recruit holds over twenty-five years of experience with financial institutions on products like derivatives. He handles heavy stuff like collateral financings, margin loans, and facilities for total return swaps.

Clancy also deals with securitizations, bonds, and CLOs. This addition continues a hiring streak for the London team that started with Reynolds and grabbed Kon Asimacopoulos alongside Mike Francies. They added pairs from Kirkland & Ellis recently to help with private equity, pushing the London roster to eighty-eight lawyers.

That count puts them thirty spots ahead of competitor Davis Polk. The London spike matches a wider push where S&C reportedly hired a junior partner to launch a Houston base. They started a digital infrastructure team for things like energy projects and GPU financing that is already working in Texas.

This departure hurts A&O Shearman because they keep losing talent. Real estate partners David Varne and David Oppenheimer just went to Latham & Watkins. They also lost Lucy Oddy from the structured finance team to the same competitor.
