Sables Scrums Ready to Crush Rugby Africa Cup

Zimbabwe's Sables rugby team prepares for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup tournament scheduled for Uganda during July. Head coach Pieter Benade credits forwards coach Joel Carew with major improvements to the squad. Carew joined the team before last year's Africa Cup and transformed their scrum performance. The Sables never moved backward during scrums at the previous tournament. Benade wanted someone experienced to lead the forward pack and make them competitive.

Carew expressed surprise at Zimbabwe's talent level when he first joined the coaching staff. He told other coaches the team had enough skill to win the championship. The forwards show excellent ball-handling abilities and strong work habits during practice sessions. Carew and Benade have worked together since 2015 and understand each other's coaching methods. The foreign coach believes Zimbabwe possesses exceptional rugby talent that needs proper development.

The Sables will gather this Sunday to continue training for the upcoming tournament. Zimbabwe won the previous Africa Cup and enters as the defending champion and top seed. The team faces Morocco, Kenya and host nation Uganda during group play. Alliance Health announced a new partnership to support the national rugby program. Zimbabwe aims to qualify for the 2027 Rugby World Cup after missing the global event since 1991.
