SADC and EAC Seek Unified DRC Governance

Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa heads SADC. He says SADC and EAC must help the DRC government control all of its land.

The two groups will meet in Tanzania on Friday. For the first time, they will discuss peace and safety in DRC. Ms. Barbra Lopi works for SADC and said this meeting is the first of its kind.

President Mnangagwa said the DRC needs one strong government voice. Different groups in the country say different things. This is not good. All sides in the fighting should come to the big meeting.

There has not been a strong DRC government in the east since 1998, making the area unsafe. Armed groups and rebels move freely, fighting over land and power. Many people have had to leave their homes, which is a big problem for the people.

The east of DRC has things like gold. Bad groups take these things to pay for guns. They hurt local people. The government is not strong enough to stop them or help the people.

Other nearby countries are also worried. The fighting can move past borders, and some countries even help the armed groups, making it harder to find peace.

The UN said countries in the area and the world should work together. They must stop the fighting and help refugees. They should stop bad sales of special rocks. And they should help poor people.

Experts say the fighting in DRC started in Burundi and Rwanda. Many refugees went to DRC. Rwanda said it wanted to keep its people safe from attackers in DRC. Uganda said the same. They went into DRC in 1996.

Other countries like Zimbabwe sent armies to help DRC. They said it was their job to keep peace in the area. The fighting between the countries got worse.

There have been peace deals, but Rwanda still has people in East DRC. Experts say countries need to work together more to fix this. They say there needs to be better governments and laws. People need to feel safe. Then, there can be real peace.

SADC and EAC want all armies that are not from DRC to leave. This could help a lot. But there are still problems to fix inside DRC. People are still angry about fighting long ago, and it is not easy to trust after that.

If countries work together in a new way, there is hope. They must put peace first. Not their wants. DRC needs real change to be safe again.
