SADC Pledges to End DRC Bloodshed

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is committed to protecting its citizens from instability and ensuring lasting peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). SADC Chairman, President Mnangagwa, made this statement at an Extraordinary Summit in Harare.

The summit was attended by several heads of state, including Presidents Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, and Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar. The DRC's President Felix Tshisekedi and Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema joined virtually.

President Mnangagwa said regional peace and security are shared responsibilities. He called on all member states to work together to achieve lasting peace in the eastern DRC. The recent death of 16 soldiers from South Africa and Malawi has escalated the situation.

The SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and the UN Mission in Congo (MONUSCO) are working to stabilize the region. President Mnangagwa expressed regret that little progress has been made since the last summit in November. He condemned the attacks on peacekeepers and civilians.

The people of the eastern DRC have suffered for a long time. SADC will intensify efforts to protect its citizens from instability. The regional bloc will pursue dialogue and peace-building to achieve peace.

President Mnangagwa also addressed the humanitarian crisis in the eastern DRC. He said the plight of millions of displaced people cannot be ignored. SADC appreciates the support from international partners.

The SADC Chairman conveyed condolences to member states and families who lost loved ones. He commended the heads of state for attending the meeting and thanked the SADC Troika for convening to discuss the security situation.

President Mnangagwa welcomed Mozambique's new President, Daniel Chapo, to the regional bloc. He looks forward to working with him to enhance regional peace and security.
