Safaricom Ethiopia Nails 10M in 90-Day Dash, Rivals Eat Dust

Safaricom Ethiopia just hit a massive customer target that has telecom experts talking. The mobile company signed up 10 million active users during just 90 days of operations. This achievement comes exactly four years after the government opened up the market to competition. Company executives celebrated the milestone as proof that Ethiopians want better phone services. The rapid growth shows how hungry people are for reliable mobile connections across the country.

The telecommunications giant poured more than 300 billion Ethiopian birr into building networks and digital systems. Their 4G coverage reaches over half the population through 3,141 active towers. These cell sites spread across more than 150 towns and cities throughout Ethiopia. Mobile internet users number 7.1 million people who consume 6.5 gigabytes of data monthly. The network handles massive amounts of traffic as customers stream videos and browse social media.

Safaricom created thousands of job opportunities for local workers during their expansion. The company employs 900 people with 97 percent being Ethiopian citizens. Over 20,000 indirect jobs emerged from their business activities and partnerships. Educational programs and emergency relief received 120 million birr in company funding. Digital training initiatives for young Ethiopians attracted 530 million birr through collaborative efforts with other organizations.
