SAG-AFTRA video game actors secure AI consent after 95% IMA vote

Video game voice actors have voted to end their massive strike after getting what they wanted from big gaming companies. The SAG-AFTRA union members said yes to a new deal by an overwhelming 95 percent margin. The strike started back in July 2024 and lasted for 11 long months. Actors refused to work because they feared companies would steal their voices using artificial intelligence technology. The new contract gives performers protection against AI abuse and includes pay raises.

The main battle centered around preventing video game giants like PlayStation and EA from copying actor voices without permission. Union negotiators spent three grueling years fighting for better terms and AI safeguards. Sarah Elmaleh led the tough negotiations while actors suffered financial hardship during the work stoppage. The final agreement requires companies to get consent before using AI versions of performer voices. Actors can also pull their consent during future strikes.

Union president Fran Drescher praised the deal and called it important progress for performer rights. Gaming industry spokeswoman Audrey Cooling said companies were happy to reach an agreement with historic wage increases. The strike caused delays for some video games that needed voice actors to complete production. Major studios like Take-Two and Activision can start hiring union performers again. The new contract prevents another strike for several years and lets the gaming industry move forward.
