Saint Cyr begs CARICOM to save shattered Haiti after Montego Bay snub

Haiti's transitional leader urged Caribbean nations to view his country as an investment destination during recent regional talks in Jamaica. President-Counsellor Laurent Saint Cyr addressed CARICOM heads of government at their 49th conference in Montego Bay, emphasizing economic opportunities across multiple sectors. His appeal focused on infrastructure development, environmental initiatives, technology advancement, educational programs, and tourism ventures. Saint Cyr highlighted particular potential in Haiti's northern and southern territories. The July 8 gathering provided a platform for discussing Haiti's reconstruction needs.

CARICOM Chairman Andrew Holness acknowledged widespread regional concerns about Haiti's current challenges. The Jamaican Prime Minister confirmed ongoing international support efforts while detailing conversations with Saint Cyr about institutional reforms. Government leaders received updates on constitutional referendum preparations and planned November elections. Security improvements remained a primary discussion topic throughout the meeting. The transitional council's progress toward democratic governance received significant attention.

Saint Cyr emphasized the necessity of unified regional action to address Haiti's security crisis. He praised nations contributing personnel to international peacekeeping operations while requesting expanded training assistance for local police forces. The Haitian official called for stronger cooperation against illegal weapons trafficking and drug smuggling networks. Regional partners received appeals for enhanced financial and technical support. Saint Cyr stressed that sustainable peace requires collaborative international engagement.
