Sakaja Waives Bills And Funds Coffins After Kibera Fire

Governor Johnson Sakaja promised free medical care for all Kibra fire victims during Sunday church services. Nairobi County will pay hospital bills and mortuary fees for families who have lost loved ones. Officials also plan to provide coffins and cover burial expenses for the eight people who died. The county government will help survivors rebuild their homes after the devastating blaze. Sakaja made these commitments at AIC Kibra, where community members gathered for worship.

Eight residents died when flames swept through the Makina area early Saturday morning around 5 am. Seven family members and one pregnant woman lost their lives during the tragedy. Twenty other people suffered serious burns, with seven patients receiving intensive care at Kenyatta National Hospital. Emergency workers rushed the most critical cases to medical facilities for treatment. Police officers continue investigating what caused the deadly fire.

Sakaja wants officials to fix dangerous electrical connections throughout informal settlements. Illegal power hookups cause frequent fires that kill residents across Nairobi. The governor believes proper electrical systems will prevent future tragedies like Saturday's incident. MP Peter Orero confirmed the disaster and deployed response teams to help affected families. Kilimani police commander Patricia Yegon leads the investigation into the fire's origin.
