Samsung and the US kneecap China's BOE over stolen OLED secrets

The U.S. International Trade Commission ruled against BOE Technology Group on July 11, 2025, after Samsung Display accused the Chinese firm of intellectual property theft. BOE violated Samsung's proprietary OLED technology by hiring former Samsung employees who shared confidential information. The commission determined that BOE developed display panels using these stolen trade secrets. This preliminary decision follows litigation that Samsung initiated in 2023. The ruling represents a significant legal precedent for technology patent protection.

BOE faces a complete ban from importing OLED products into American markets for fifteen years. Samsung controlled approximately 49 percent of the iPhone OLED panel supply during the first quarter of 2025. The restriction allows Samsung and LG Display to strengthen their market positions without Chinese competition. This outcome may escalate tensions between the American and Chinese technology sectors. The decision demonstrates serious consequences for companies that engage in intellectual property violations.
