The Sandals Foundation provided medical equipment and supplies valued at $6 million to Bustamante Hospital for Children to support the treatment of critically ill pediatric patients relocated from facilities damaged by Hurricane Melissa. The contribution included a neonatal ventilator, infusion pump, blood gas analyzer, various monitoring devices, and additional medical instruments to expand capacity at Jamaica's sole specialist children's hospital.
Bustamante has accepted transfers from Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital, Black River Hospital, Cornwall Regional Hospital, and Falmouth Hospital, accommodating surgical cases, neonates, and subspecialty patients in cardiology and renal care. Chief Medical Officer Michelle-Ann Dawson acknowledged temporary family separations would create difficulties and indicated plans to assist parents through care packages and psychological services.
Executive Director Heidi Clarke stated the philanthropic organization delivered life-saving equipment within 72 hours after consultation with the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Local suppliers, Jamaica Hospital Supplies and Medical Link, provided the donated items, which enabled care for a premature infant weighing 830 grams admitted following the delivery.
