SANTACO and GNTA will take the government rift public in Tshwane

Talk about a powder keg waiting to blow. The Gauteng taxi bigwigs are calling an emergency presser for Monday morning because they say the provincial government has completely ghosted them on actual collaboration.

Representatives from SANTACO Gauteng and the GNTA are gathering at that old hall on Church Street in Tshwane at 11 AM. Their main beef? Unilateral administrative moves that skip over any real consultation process. They argue that without a respectful working partnership, the whole daily commute for millions of workers, learners, and job seekers starts falling apart fast.

Operating licence delays are a huge flashpoint here. Applications stuck in limbo mean vehicles sit idle, drivers lose income, and passengers end up crammed into fewer rides or wait forever. The province has been chipping away at a massive backlog for months, but collection and compliance hiccups keep cropping up. Better dialogue could catch these issues before they spiral into route chaos.

Leaders also plan to lay out their vision for future relations with the roads and transport department. They insist collaborative governance isn't a nice-to-have but a must-have for stable, affordable mobility. When trust erodes, so does the ability to solve route conflicts or improve safety standards early. Financial strain on operators eventually trickles down to empty pockets and fewer taxis on the street.

This isn't about picking a fight for kicks. The groups want transparent processes, predictable licence renewals, and joint problem-solving on policy changes. A solid partnership has previously helped raise vehicle standards and boost formalisation. Rebuilding that vibe is now non-negotiable. Monday's gathering gives them a chance to spell out concrete steps for restoring constructive engagement.
