Sapes Trust accuses cops of covering up bombing probe

A Zimbabwean think tank might sue the police over a suspicious bombing. The SAPES Trust is threatening legal action, accusing authorities of a slow walk investigation into the firebombing of their Belgravia seminar room last October. The attack, using petrol as an accelerant, destroyed the venue just before a press conference by activists opposing a term extension for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The organization alleges state collusion, pointing to unmarked Ford Ranger vehicles and military-style weapons used in the incident. They noted the immediate presence of riot police who blocked the scheduled press conference that morning, preventing opposition leaders from rallying against the constitutional overreach. With no arrests over two months later and key witness statements, including from an abducted security guard, still withheld by investigators, SAPES Trust claims the pace of the probe indicates a deliberate cover-up. The police CID confirmed the investigation but has produced no breakthroughs, deepening suspicions about official involvement in the act of political intimidation.
