Sarawak sets a gradual vape ban plan

Sarawak will introduce a phased prohibition on vape products following cabinet approval, with the decision driven by escalating usage rates, particularly among teenagers. Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Fatimah Abdullah announced the measure during a drug prevention program closing ceremony at University Technology Sarawak, describing vaping as a critical public health concern requiring immediate action.

Statistics reveal the scope of the problem, as Sarawak leads Malaysia in adolescent vaping, with approximately 39,608 users between ages 13 and 17 recorded through the National Health and Morbidity Survey. This figure represents a significant jump from previous years. State education authorities have identified over 1,000 students involved with electronic cigarettes, while police documented multiple cases involving prohibited substances in vape liquids.

Fatimah stressed that enhanced treatment programs must accompany the ban to provide effective support for those struggling with addiction. She framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to combat substance abuse, calling for cooperation across all sectors of society to protect community wellbeing.
