Sassa throws R10 at grants, October blues linger

South African officials confirmed on Thursday that monthly welfare payments will increase by R10, starting with the October disbursements. The South African Social Security Agency announced the adjustment follows Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's budget proposal for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Recipients of old-age benefits will see their amounts increase from R2,310 to R2,320, while those over 75 will receive R2,340 instead of R2,330. Disability and care dependency grants also advance to R2,320 from R2,310.

Agency head Themba Matlou praised the government's continued support for vulnerable citizens during economic challenges. Officials confirmed October payments will proceed without delays across all programs. Old age grants are distributed on Oct. 2, disability payments follow on Oct. 3, and children's benefits arrive on Oct. 6.
