India's highest court approved a major housing project in Mumbai after rejecting appeals from local groups. Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta dismissed petitions from three resident organizations that opposed the redevelopment plan. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority received permission to rebuild 143 acres across three sections of Motilal Nagar. Officials will use the Construction and Development Agency method to complete this work.
The government granted special status to this project because the housing authority controls the land. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that getting approval from thousands of residents would cause major delays. Residents will receive much larger apartments than their current homes. The court noted that people get 1,600 square feet instead of their present 230 square feet.
Adani Realty's subsidiary will build new homes for 3,700 people over seven years. This 36,000-crore project will create thousands of residential and commercial units while relocating nearby slum residents.
