School food theft probe heats up, matron in custody

School officials got busted for stealing student food supplies. The Ghana Education Service condemned an alleged theft at Awaso STEM Senior High School in the Western North Region. The school's matron, Benedicta Nyamadi, and a cook, Rachel Kyeremateng, were arrested over claims they took food meant for students. A statement from GES spokesperson Daniel Afenyi said the service has zero tolerance for actions hurting student welfare. It called the alleged actions a breach of ethical standards and a compromise of student nutrition and well-being.

The GES stated it fully supports the ongoing police investigation and will cooperate with all relevant authorities. It assured parents and the public that systems are in place to find and address this kind of wrongdoing in schools. The service warned all school staff across the country to manage public resources responsibly. It noted that appropriate sanctions will follow any proven misconduct. The case has drawn significant public concern as authorities continue their probe.
