Scott Boland tipped for Perth Ashes test as Cummins ruled out

Former cricketer and coach Simon Katich said Scott Boland is the likely replacement for injured Australia captain Pat Cummins in the Ashes opener after reports confirmed Cummins will miss the first Test in Perth on Nov. 21 because of lower back stress. Cummins could also miss the full series against England as scans showed his injury has not healed. Katich identified Michael Neser from Queensland as another possible option, while Victoria’s Fergus O’Neill is in contention after earning the Sheffield Shield player of the season award.

Katich mentioned South Australia’s Henry Thornton as a candidate, pointing to his wicket-taking ability and recent Australia A appearance. Despite other options, Katich believes Boland is the primary choice if Cummins is unavailable. Cummins’ absence poses a major challenge for Australia in their effort to retain the Ashes.
