Scott gives $19M to Voorhees in SC

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated 19 million dollars to Voorhees University. The historically Black university, located in Denmark, South Carolina, will use the funds for scholarships, endowment growth, and facility upgrades. University President Dr. Ronnie Hopkins described the contribution as a powerful endorsement of the institution's work.

This marks Scott's second major gift to Voorhees, following a four-million-dollar donation several years prior. That earlier funding reportedly helped the university increase its enrollment and launch new programs in business, healthcare, and STEM fields. Scott has a history of supporting historically Black colleges and universities, including Howard University, Morgan State University, and Spelman College, with substantial donations.

Her philanthropic approach often involves providing unrestricted funds, allowing recipient organizations to allocate the money according to their specific needs. Since her divorce, Scott has donated billions to numerous nonprofit groups, with a particular focus on organizations serving marginalized communities.
