Scottish salmon adds £1bn to economy

A new independent report concludes that Scottish salmon farming contributes approximately one billion pounds annually to the national economy. The study found the industry's economic impact has grown significantly, supporting 11,000 jobs nationwide with average salaries notably higher than the Scottish norm.

The sector's direct economic contribution and its extensive supply chain generate substantial value, with the Highlands region benefiting most. Industry leaders attributed this growth to the hard work of farmers and strong global demand for a premium product. The report described salmon farming as a vital economic anchor for remote coastal communities, providing stable, year-round employment.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes commended the sector for its resilience and innovation, pledging continued government support. With its high environmental standards and expanding export markets, the industry is positioned to remain a cornerstone of Scotland's rural economy.
