Sean Williams left Zimbabwe qualifiers over substance abuse

Sean Williams quit Zimbabwe’s 2025 T20 World Cup qualifiers due to substance abuse. The former captain told Sportscast his withdrawal stemmed entirely from personal struggles, not team conflicts or Zimbabwe Cricket issues. Family wellbeing had to take priority over international play.

His life outside cricket was falling apart despite solid on-field performance. Williams admitted he could no longer hide the problem and needed immediate professional intervention. Honesty about the situation forced him to step away before the Harare tournament began.

Rehabilitation in the Eastern Highlands became his only viable path forward. Treatment addressed the addiction while rebuilding his personal foundation. This decision ultimately concluded his twenty-year international career at age forty. Professional help replaced attempts to manage the crisis while competing.
