Secret Clubfoot Plague Traps Malawi Kids

Health workers worry about 200,000 children born with twisted feet across Malawi. Many kids cannot walk properly because their families hide them from doctors. People march through Mulanje town during World Clubfoot Day to teach others about the problem. Parents keep children away from hospitals because they believe bad spirits cause twisted feet. Community leaders want families to learn that doctors can fix these foot problems.

Shadreck Chilupsya works at Beit Cure Children's Hospital helping kids with foot troubles. He says parents think witchcraft creates clubfoot conditions instead of normal birth differences. Alex Mzimkambani manages programs that help disabled people find medical care. Both men tell communities that treatment works when families bring babies to clinics early. Rural areas lack special doctors who know how to straighten children's feet.

Mary Chitambuli brought her child to the hospital for foot surgery. Her baby can walk and run like other kids after getting proper medical help. She tells other mothers to take their children to health centers instead of hiding them at home. Several organizations give free treatment to poor families who cannot pay for operations. Parents received awards for bringing their kids to doctors and helping them walk again.
