Senegambia Bed Net Blitz to Crush Malaria

Gambia plans to give away 1.6 million treated bed nets to people across the country. Officials from Gambia and Senegal met Tuesday in Kerr Ali to start their joint 2025 bed net campaign. During the next four weeks, both nations will hand out more than 5 million new nets for free. These improved nets fight malaria better than older versions. The campaign marks the third joint effort between the two countries since 2019.

Health Minister Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh said these nets will reach all regions of Gambia. He stressed that everyone must sleep under these nets every night to stay safe from mosquitoes. The campaign uses the message that mosquitoes cross borders freely. Senegal Health Minister Professor Ibrahima Sy praised the partnership between President Barrow and President Faye. Senegal added digital tools to track this campaign.

Both countries aim to end malaria deaths completely before 2030. The ministers called the partnership a model for other African nations. Their previous campaign in 2022 successfully gave out eight million nets. Health officials warned that any break in protection allows malaria to return quickly. The disease hits children and pregnant women hardest when prevention efforts stop.
