Seoul erupts as anti-China and pro-China rallies clash over election conspiracies

Human rights advocates gathered Friday evening to counter rising anti-Chinese sentiment that has gained traction among far-right factions across Korea. The demonstration began at 7:30 p.m. in Daerim-dong within Yeongdeungpo-gu district. Approximately 70 organizations united under the banner People of Western Seoul Opposing the Far-right to organize the counter-rally. The coalition brought together immigrant advocacy groups, human rights organizations, and members of the Democratic Labor Party. Their action directly challenged a competing demonstration by supporters of impeached former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

YouTubers promoting Yoon's reinstatement had organized the pro-Yoon gathering in the same neighborhood streets. These content creators continue advocating for the former president despite his impeachment following his December 3 martial law declaration. Daerim-dong serves as home to a significant Chinese immigrant community, making it a focal point for both pro-Chinese rights activists and conspiracy theorists. The district became contested ground where supporters and opponents of Chinese residents confronted each other. Anti-Chinese demonstrators displayed signs attacking local Chinese residents as communist loyalists.

Election fraud allegations formed the foundation of Yoon's martial law justification, though investigative bodies have repeatedly debunked such claims. The National Election Commission, courts, and other authorities conducted 181 raids since January 2020 to investigate these assertions. A fabricated January story alleged that 99 Chinese operatives confessed to election interference after capture by South Korean and American forces. Both governments immediately rejected this false narrative, launching criminal investigations into its spread. Despite overwhelming evidence disproving election manipulation, some Yoon supporters maintain these beliefs while directing hostility toward Chinese immigrants.
