Seychelles vote - the priest or the wizard

Seychelles conducts presidential elections from Thursday through Saturday as environmental controversies dominate the campaign. The Indian Ocean nation boasts Africa's highest per capita wealth at $18,000 despite battling severe heroin addiction affecting up to 10,000 residents. Anglican priest Wavel Ramkalawan seeks reelection against Patrick Herminie, whose United Seychelles party controlled the archipelago from independence until 2020. Herminie faced witchcraft charges in 2023 before authorities dismissed the case as politically motivated. Drug trafficking remains a persistent challenge along this Afghanistan to East Africa smuggling corridor.

The central campaign issue involves a controversial 70-year lease of Assumption Island to Qatari hotel developers. Environmental activists express alarm over potential damage to nearby Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO marine sanctuary protecting the world's largest populations of tortoises and coconut crabs. Herminie pledges to terminate the Qatari development agreement if elected. Ramkalawan declined participation in campaign debates while defending his administration's anti-corruption record. Eight candidates compete this year, reflecting growing voter dissatisfaction with established political parties.
