Shakib Al Hasan joins Dubai Capitals in Global Super League

Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan joins Dubai Capitals for the Global Super League. The 38-year-old player takes the spot left empty after Keshav Maharaj stepped away. Dubai Capitals made the announcement on social media this past Sunday. The veteran allrounder cannot play for his home country right after facing several problems. Foreign leagues remain his only option to continue his cricket career.

Shakib played three games for Lahore Qalandars during the Pakistan Super League earlier this year. That tournament marked his return to cricket after a six-month break. Officials had suspended him because of bowling action concerns and other troubles. The Global Super League second phase kicks off this Thursday. Dubai Capitals face New Zealand's Central Districts in their opening match.

Dubai Capitals won the UAE's International League T20 last season. The tournament features five teams from different countries and leagues. Rangpur Riders, Hobart Hurricanes, and Amazon Warriors complete the lineup. Cricket West Indies organizes the competition in Guyana. Rangpur Riders claimed the first championship last December.

Shakib played for Rangpur Riders during the 2024 Bangladesh Premier League season. Rangpur wanted to keep him for the Global Super League but political problems in Bangladesh prevented the move. Dubai Capitals and Rangpur Riders will meet on July 16th. The top two teams from the preliminary round advance to the final. The championship game takes place on July 18th.
