Showbouy Farms rewards student farmers, tackles food gaps

Some farm exec started handing out prizes to kid farmers. Isaac Agyiri, who runs Showbouy Farms, set up a new awards thing for students and schools that farm in the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira district. About thirty schools joined the contest, with Nsuem D A Basic School winning the top spot and getting a mini fridge.

Two other schools, Somnyamekodur and Atwereboanda, came in second and third, winning soccer gear. Two students, Stephen Arhin Mahama and Alberta Amoah, got named the best male and female agroecology students in the program. Agyiri said the whole school farm competition is about pushing sustainable farming and getting kids into the ag business early. He argued that letting students grow food teaches them real skills and could even help feed them, cutting down on protests over bad cafeteria meals.

He pointed out that a ton of school land just sits empty and could be used for this. Agyiri also mentioned a recent comment from a big shot in the president's agriculture office, who said high schools will soon have to farm their own food to fight shortages, which might save the government a huge chunk of change on its meal program. The winning schools thanked the farm group and promised to keep at it. The local district boss, Patrick Fiable, tossed in a box of machetes to help out the awards program.
