The Special Investigating Unit has referred seven former Denel employees for potential criminal prosecution to the National Prosecuting Authority. This action is part of its probe into state capture, focusing on alleged corruption linked to the Gupta family. Advocate Andy Mothibi, head of the unit, confirmed the referrals stem from an investigation into irregularities that caused major financial harm to the state-owned arms manufacturer.
The investigation uncovered that officials facilitated improper procurement and conflicts of interest, which allegedly allowed the Gupta business family to exert undue influence. These activities, including a joint venture with Gupta-linked VR Laser, contributed to massive losses at Denel. The National Prosecuting Authority will now determine what charges, which could include fraud and corruption, will be filed.
