Six dead in daylight drive-by massacre in Reiger Park

A drive-by attack in Reiger Park claimed six lives and wounded three others on Saturday afternoon, prompting authorities to launch an urgent search for the gunmen. The assault unfolded on Williams Road around 5 p.m. when shooters in two VW Polo sedans — one silver, one black — opened fire on residents without warning. Three men and three women died at the scene in the Boksburg township east of Johannesburg.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a spokesperson for Gauteng police, said investigators have not yet determined what prompted the violence. Major General Fred Kekana, the acting provincial police commissioner, mobilized forensic specialists and detectives to pursue leads. One witness reported that a relative killed in the shooting had been named on a hit list, raising questions about whether specific individuals were targeted amid the broader gunfire.

Officers are urging residents to share information through the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or the MySapsApp. The attack adds to a troubling pattern of mass shootings across South Africa, where authorities recorded an average of 64 homicides daily despite a 12.4 percent decrease in murders during early 2025. Investigators believe gang conflicts or narcotics-related disputes often fuel such vehicle-borne assaults.
