Six from one family dead in Bukwo landslides

At least nine people died after landslides hit Bukwo and Kween districts in eastern Uganda on Wednesday following heavy overnight rain across the Sebei sub-region. Transport was disrupted on the Kapchorwa-Suam road after the SIT Bridge was buried under mud and debris.

Officials said three children were buried by mud in Nyalit parish, Chesower sub-county, Bukwo. LC5 councilor David Kapcheronge reported four families were affected, with six members of one family dead and several others injured. Sipi Region police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang said officers and residents recovered the bodies and took them to Bukwo Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. Search operations continued amid fears that more people were trapped. Local leaders in Bukwo and Kween asked the government and aid groups for relief as persistent rains put more homes at risk of fresh slides.
