Smart licenses roll out, reckless drivers beware

The Kenyan Cabinet just signed off on a new type of high-tech driver's license. These second-generation smart licenses will be rolled out via a public-private partnership. They plan to pack in features like a digital wallet, an instant traffic fines system, and a merit point tracker for drivers.

These are chip-based cards meant to hold all your driving info and history, supposedly making everything more secure and efficient. This comes after the transport safety authority, the NTSA, recently said it would force retests for drivers caught misbehaving by their digital monitoring system. That system, called the Intelligent Road Safety Management System, watches vehicles in real time, tracking speed and other violations.

The overall push here is to modernize the whole transport setup with more digital enforcement and safety tracking. The goal is a safer, more connected system by tying the new licenses directly to real-time driver monitoring.
