Sofia mayor refuses garbage deal, claims mafia extortion

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev announced the formation of an organization to handle garbage collection in the Lyulin and Krasno Selo districts after refusing to sign a contract with inflated prices. Terziev rejected a 420-leva cleaning rate when the current services cost 144 leva, and the procurement estimate was set at 200 leva. He accused companies of cartelization and attempted extortion after one international competitor had trucks burned and another lost its license.

The sixth municipal zone remains the sole problem area as the municipal company Sofekostroy declined to perform cleaning work under city council rather than mayoral control. Terziev appealed to residents to endure temporary inconvenience rather than submit to what he termed a corruption fee that could double or triple costs. He defended his position against criticism from Delyan Peevski by calling him the state's biggest robber.

Terziev approved a BG-ALERT message for snowfall on Vitosha Mountain but acknowledged communication gaps in the warning system. He declined to comment on a potential presidential candidacy from PP-DB colleagues.
