South Africa magistrates protest pay, conditions

South African magistrates have organized street demonstrations through their professional association to demand better compensation and workplace protections, warning that prolonged neglect threatens court operations nationwide. The Judicial Officers Association of South Africa reports its members face financial hardship severe enough to force many into debt review, credit blacklisting, and civil judgments despite handling 95 percent of the country's judicial workload.

Association president Neelan Karikan states magistrates earn monthly salaries equivalent to what senior lawyers charge for a single day while lacking benefits provided to high court judges, including liability protections and adequate security. The organization seeks unified judicial standards, internal vacancy postings, dedicated pension funds, and constitutional safeguards against attacks that have killed and injured lower court officers.

Appeals to parliament, the presidency, justice officials, and human rights bodies have produced sympathy but no concrete reforms, forcing the association representing 800 paid members from a total magistrate population of 2,000 to escalate pressure through public action.
