South Africa's Public Protector disputes Jessie Majome's claims on ZHRC healthcare talks

South Africa's Public Protector has disputed statements from Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission chairperson Jessie Majome regarding collaborative efforts on healthcare access issues. Majome told Newzroom Afrika that her organization had formally contacted the South African office about Zimbabwean nationals being refused medical treatment. The Public Protector South Africa office released a statement on Monday denying any record of such complaints. Officials emphasized they received no formal requests concerning healthcare discrimination against Zimbabweans. The denial came after multiple media outlets sought clarification about the alleged partnership.

The South African institution confirmed meeting with ZHRC representatives during September 2024 for routine institutional exchanges. This benchmarking visit focused on sharing best practices across various governance areas rather than addressing specific healthcare concerns. The Public Protector provided documents to strengthen ZHRC capabilities following the delegation's request in October. Officials described these interactions as standard cooperation between similar institutions from different countries. The discussions covered general public service challenges rather than targeted discrimination issues.
