Soweto community takes action in water conservation drive

Government authorities collaborated with Rand Water and Brandscapers Africa to encourage residents in Orlando West to adopt better practices for managing their household supplies. Provincial head Justice Maluleke addressed community members on Thursday at Uncle Tom's Community Centre, stressing that South Africans consume roughly 300 liters daily per capita while the worldwide figure stands at 173 liters. He attributed excessive consumption to infrastructure deterioration and careless habits.

Teams conducted door-to-door visits on Friday after organizing a cleanup along the Klip River. Volunteers distributed questionnaires to more than 200 households to document local difficulties with delivery and maintenance. Maluleke warned that the nation ranks among the globe's most arid regions and receives approximately 464 millimeters of precipitation annually.

Officials urged families receiving subsidized services to exercise restraint and requested all users to identify damaged pipes promptly. The outreach program launched on Oct. 30, 2025, at the Hector Pieterson Museum before expanding to surrounding neighborhoods experiencing chronic interruptions and reduced flow.
