St Petersburg Historic Buildings Face Designer Siege

Designers want to rebuild nearly one out of every five historic buildings around St. Petersburg. The city center contains about 9,200 valuable structures that catch architects' attention. Around 3,700 of these buildings carry official monument status from the government. Reconstruction plans could affect 17 percent of important structures across the area.

Companies prefer working with official monuments rather than regular old buildings. Business leaders convert these historic spaces into modern offices and hotels for visitors. Some developers turn old houses into apartments for residents. Alexey Mikhailov from ASM company explains that central locations make these projects attractive.

The city sells architectural monuments for just one ruble to encourage development. Officials recently calculated how much street monuments cost the government. Property developers focus on buildings with historical importance because they offer better business opportunities. The reconstruction trend continues growing as more investors discover these bargain properties.
