Storm Johannes kills three in Sweden, cuts Nordic power

A deadly winter storm just killed three people across Sweden. A powerful system named Storm Johannes slammed Nordic countries, causing major travel chaos and widespread blackouts. One man died after a tree fell on him at the Kungsberget ski resort. A utility worker died in a separate accident while on the job up north. Police also reported a third man died after being hit by a tree while working in a forest near Hofors.

Tens of thousands of homes lost power in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. In Sweden alone, over forty thousand households were in the dark, and many train routes were canceled. The storm disrupted roads, railways, and ferry services across the region. Norwegian emergency crews responded to more than two hundred weather calls in the Nordland area. Roughly twenty-three thousand homes there lost electricity.

In Finland, where the storm was called Hannes, the winds weakened but left a huge mark. More than sixty thousand households had no power. The storm also pushed two planes off a runway at Kittila airport. A Swiss Air jet with about a hundred fifty passengers and a smaller aircraft slid into snow banks. Nobody was hurt in that incident.
