Tanzania's education ministry warned students against submitting artificial intelligence-generated essays for regional writing contests. Deputy Permanent Secretary Hussein Omar said automated text violates authenticity requirements and results in immediate removal from competition.
Omar addressed winners from 2023 and 2024 East African Community and Southern African Development Community essay competitions on Sunday in Dodoma. He praised Tanzanian participants who placed nationally and regionally in both contests.
Education Commissioner Lyabwene Mtahabwa said 1,096 students entered the 2023 competitions while 892 participated in 2024. The ministry expanded the number of national winners from 3 to 20 to encourage broader participation.
Omar advised students to access regional organization websites for research material. He directed school administrators to verify entries follow official guidelines before submission and urged French-language schools to submit more essays in that language.
